@scorpiosunsapphic no need to apologize! I understand but they really are images I had saved on my phone. I understand that she writes about African girls from different backgrounds but I didn’t want to just google African black girl images and put them in a mood board without having extensive knowledge of the culture. I also don’t feel like I have the right to do so since I am not African. I didn’t want to be offensive.

Actually, I should apologize, I didn’t mean to come off as combative as I did when I really should have just asked why you made the choice that you did while making the moodboard. I still don’t agree that this is how the character should be portrayed, seeing as Nnedi very specifically writes about African girls from different backgrounds, but I didn’t make the moodboard so it doesn’t matter. I’ll be better about how I engage in dialogue on here, next time.

@scorpiosunsapphic while i appreciate your comment on the images portrayed in my moodboard, it’s not supposed to be super accurate. I made it a while ago before I even finished the book and I had a lot of those images saved on my phone already. I wasn’t trying to erase her culture even though I finished the entire series and there are many times where she does not where clay and even questions why she wears it but thanks 🙏

As cool as this is, this isn’t what Binti would look like at all! She’s very specifically Himba and this erases the of the clay that her people use to cover/bathe themselves, which is one of the biggest themes in the series.
